Law Enforcement Only Class

This class is limited to sworn law enforcement officers, corrections officers, or current students at Fox Valley Technical College or Northeast Technical College Recuit Academies.

As law enforcement officers, we come into contact with a wide variety of people. And while the vast majority of these contacts are peaceful with subjects voluntarily complying to direction, there are times we have to use physical force to achieve control. In Defensive and Arrest Tactics (DAAT), we as law enforcement officers are trained when and how to use physical force to control people.

Wisconsin's system of Defensive and Arrest Tactics is defined as a system of verbalization coupled with physical alternatives. In Wisconsin, our use of force "physical alternatives" must fit into one of these categories:

  1. A trained technique
  2. A dynamic application of a trained technique
  3. A technique not trained, but justifiable under the circumstances

The goal of the law enforcement class at the Fox Valley Grappling Club is not to simply teach the same DAAT techniques you are taught at your agency. Our goal is to break down the intervention options within the disturbance resolution model and include concepts of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing and Muay Thai to enhance officer safety and success in the field.

There are some officer/subject factors that are out of your control. No amount of training can make you taller or decrease the amount of subjects when you are outnumbered. But your training can help negate subject size and strength, improve confidence and increase your overall fitness level.

The law enforcement classes at the Fox Valley Grappling Club are unique because they are taught by one of Wisconsin's most accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts instructors who is also a sworn officer with an agency in the Fox Valley area. While other schools may try to offer similar Jiu-Jitsu training, we can say confidently that you will be learning from a fellow officer who will make sure the techniques stay within the scope of your duties and done correctly so it does not stray from department policy.

A brief overview of some of the techniques covered include but are not limited to:

  • Advantages and disadvantages of each ground position (mount, side mount, rear mount, guard, knee on stomach, and triple-attack)
  • Avoidance and escapes from each ground position
  • Effective control and cuffing (when appropriate) techniques from each ground position
  • Gun retention for each ground position
  • Escaping and avoiding many dangerous holds an officer might encounter with a non-compliant suspect currently training Mixed Martial Arts
  • Avoidance, escapes and effective offensive takedowns from clinch and standing
  • Generating increased power from punches, kicks and knee strikes

Worst Case Scenarios

Almost all existing defensive tactics courses rely heavily on the compliance of the suspect or on the support of another individual to neutralize the threat. What makes our program unique is that it is designed to prepare a solo law enforcement officer to deal with the worst case scenarios that will occur during a physical altercation with a larger, more athletic, non-compliant suspect/ enemy/ opponent. Here are some of the scenarios that are covered:

  • The violent subject is attempting to strangle or punch the officer from the full mount
  • The officer achieves mount and seeks to maintain control of the aggressive subject
  • The officer achieves mount but the violent subject rolls uncontrollably to their knees
  • The non-compliant subject tries to strangle the officer from the bottom of the mount
  • During a routine conversation, the subject unexpectedly attacks the officer with punches leaving no time to try and create space from the inside position
  • The uncooperative subject tries to avoid arrest at all cost by staying on his/her feet
  • The officer is trapped underneath an extremely aggressive subject who is determined to achieve victory by knockout or worse
  • The stronger or heavier subject achieves a top position and uses their weight and size to crush the smaller officer
  • The officer is operating solo and needs to apply the handcuffs on the resisting subject
  • The subject is pinned by the officer but is determined to get up and fight back
  • The subject has had some grappling or fighting experience and uses the guard position to immobilize the officer
  • The subject is able to mount the officer and the primary mount escape technique fails
  • In a deadly force situation, the officer is trapped underneath the violent subject and is unable to safely draw his/her firearm
  • The violent subject is able to get past the officer's guard to a more advantageous position
  • The officer is under the aggressive subject in a crowded area and needs to safely draw his/her firearm, TASER or other tool
  • During a routine conversation, the subject suddenly rushes towards the officer in an attempt to gain control of the firearm
  • The larger subject catches the smaller officer in a violent headlock
  • The subject resists arrest by turning face down and hiding his hands under his body
  • The officer is underneath the violent subject and must stand up immediately
