Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling, especially ground fighting, with the goal of gaining a dominant position and using joint locks and choke holds to force an opponent to submit. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be trained for self-defense, sport grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts competition. Sparring, commonly referred to as "rolling" and live drill play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition (although no one is required to compete).
Beginning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
This class is recommended for everyone who is first starting at the Grappling Club. These classes focus on the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The fundamentals are a necessity for anyone looking to compete or fight in mixed martial arts. And for those who are looking at training for physical fitness and/or self-defense, the lighter pace of the beginning class give you a chance to secure a strong foundation before moving on to the more difficult rolling classes.
Required gear includes a gi (uniform) and athletic supporter. Optional gear includes a mouthguard and wrestling shoes. Classes are on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30pm and Saturdays from 10-11am. We are finalizing a third scheduled beginning class
Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
The advanced "competition" class focuses much more on the conditioning and live rolling needed to be successful at the higher levels of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. Techniques will still be shown, and new members are welcome to attend, but the training will be more demanding than the beginner class.
Required gear includes a gi (uniform) and athletic supporter. Optional gear includes a mouthguard and wrestling shoes. These classes are currently held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30-8pm.
Live Rolling (Sparring)
The live rolling class is to help simulate the length and intensity of a competition. No techniques are shown. Practices consist of 5-minute timed matches held back-to-back for an entire hour.
Required gear includes a gi (uniform) and athletic supporter. Optional gear includes a mouthguard and wrestling shoes. These classes are currently held on Saturdays from 11am-noon. Additional live rolling classes will be scheduled later in the summer.
