Frequently Asked Questions

We are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding our club and our programs. To help answer some of the most common questions we receive, please see below. Further questions can be directed to info@foxvalleygrapplingclub.com or stop in for a quick tour.

Answers

[Q] Do I need to start in a beginners class or can I come to any of the practices - even without any previous experience?
[A] Although it's always recommended to come to a beginners class when available (such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) everyone is welcome to start training in any of our classes. If your schedule limits you to training on nights a beginner class is not available, we'd rather let you train than keep you away. For other programs like Boxing or Muay Thai, we don't have a separate beginners group, so everyone trains together.

[Q] What do I need for my first day of Boxing? Will I have to fight or spar?
[A] For your first day of boxing you just need to wear something comfortable. We offer boxing gloves for you to use during your two week free trial period. After you've taken a few weeks, we suggest you then make the investment in your own gloves, hand wraps and jump rope. This equipment can be purchased through the club or on your own. Further equipment won't be needed until you decide you are ready to spar. No one is required to spar, so if you joined just to get in shape and to learn technique, no further equipment would be required.

[Q] What do I need for my first day of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? What does "gi" and "no-gi" mean on the schedule? Can I get any color gi?
[A] For your first day of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu you just need to wear something comfortable. After you've taken a few weeks, we suggest you then make the investment to purchase your own gi (uniform). Most gis are either white or blue. Black is available but not recommended. Further equipment such as board shorts and rash guards are optional.

Classes listed on the schedule as "gi only" mean a gi must be worn during that time. "No gi" class times are for training specifically without a gi. Anything on the schedule listed as just "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" would be gi optional.

[Q] I would like to compete in MMA. What should I focus on when I first start training?
[A] For anyone, even high school and college level wrestlers, we recommend at least starting with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to get comfortable with the positions and submissions. However, training in multiple programs is going to get fighters ready to compete the quickest. Anyone who wants to fight for the FVGC Team must meet certain attendance requirements, be current on training dues and have the consent of the club coaching staff.

[Q] I've heard training at the FVGC is pretty rough. Is training at the club dangerous?
[A] Like any physical activity, there is always a risk of danger. However, we take safety very seriously and work hard to make sure our members can push themselves with the least amount of risk. Highly dangerous techniques are not allowed, and any sparring is done under the supervision of an experienced FVGC coach.
